Something Better Beginning
The songs have been drafted. The albums have been sequecned.
And the match-ups have been assigned. The 2005 Kinks Tournament
is set to begin. But not before Mike Rothe gives his analysis.
watershedcentral.com's KINKS DRAFT 2005
album kommentary by Mike Rothe
As with all competitions there is always
a long line of windbags looking to analyze another's performance
to death. I am one of those windbags. With no predisposed
opinion, I give you my unbiased predictions for this contest:
Twelve Reasons The Beatles Are
Overrated
kompiled by: Mike Rothe
Predictable
A Rock and Roll Fantasy
Days
Did Ya
God's Children
Headmaster
Apeman
Mr. Big Man
Long Distance
Life on the Road
I'm In Disgrace
Celluloid Heroes
The clear winner. Strong from the 1 spot
to the 12th. Picking up "Celluloid Heroes" at
the 12th spot will definitely be the sleeper song the
other teams will be kicking themselves about for years
to come. Rumor has it this team owner is so confident
that he has already purchased crown and scepter polish.

Picture Book
Sold Me Out
I'm Not Like Everybody Else
Waterloo Sunset
Autumn Almanac
The Hard Way
Wonderboy
Jack the Idiot Dunce
He's Evil
Party Line
This Is Where I Belong
Better Things
Pandering to the public with picks like
Hewlett Packard's "Picture Book," perennial
wonderboy Joe Oestreich will give Rothe a run for his
money. With two picks from Schoolboys In Disgrace, it
is obvious he is trying to copy Rothe's formula for success.
But will the voters realize this?
Kill Yourself

Misfits
Property
Too Much On My Mind
How Do I Get Close?
How Are You
Catch Me Now I'm Falling
Killing time
Cliches of the World
Summer's Gone
Yo-Yo
Don't Forget To Dance
Have Another Drink
Clearly a rebuilding year for this gloomy
team. With entries from UK Jive and Preservation this
team is going to have problems with the other powerhouses
in this division. A very strong starting three won't help
this misfit. "Catch Me I'm Falling," indeed,
into the cellar.

The First Time We Fall in Love
Something Better Beginning
The Way Love Used To Be
Strangers
Shangri-la
Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight
Mister Pleasant
Such a Shame
Add It Up
Art Lover
Complicated Life
Sitting in the Midday Sun
Allegations of ballot tampering and alcoholism
will plague this Kinks Draft commissioner for years to
come. But with monster picks like "The First Time
We Fall In Love" and "Strangers," this
art lover will definitely be adding it up. His victories,
that is.
Somewhere Past the Corner of Loneliness and Agitation
kompiled by: David Martin
Till the End of the Day
Dead End Street
A Well-Respected Man
State of Confusion
Tired of Waiting for You
Where Have all the Good Times Gone?
Pressure
Juke Box Music
20th Century Man
Destroyer
Big Sky
Moving Pictures
An expansion team catering to the early
Kinks material with his first 5 picks. A bold move in
a predominantly 80's Kinks league. Only halfway through
his roster does he realize he is in a state of confusion
and begins to stock up on Arista classics. Will this late
switch in draft philosophy help or hinder this team?
Kut & Paste
kompiled by: Biggie McDermott
Working at the Factory
Set Me Free
Who'll Be the Next in Line
Death of a Clown
Sleepwalker
Prince of the Punks
Living on a Thin Line
Father Christmas
I Took My Baby Home
Dear Margaret
Mountain Woman
I'll Remember
With an alternate at the number one spot
(6 alternates total), picking 6th in the draft could spell
trouble for this team who was predicted to win it all.
McDermott will need to wheel, and possibly deal, for some
higher caliber songs if he wants to make it to the show,
if not, he can forget to dance with the big dogs.

Dream
Top of the Pops (live)
The Poseur
Starstruck
Motorway
Gotta Get the First Plane Home
Powerman
Nothing Last Forever
Most Exclusive Residence For Sale
Young and Innocent Days
Back To Front
Here Comes Yet Another Day
This poseur leans heavily on the Klassic
Kinks, a little too heavy if you catch my drift. With
a few strong picks such as "Back to Front" and
"Here Comes Yet Another Day," this powerman
will most likely get the first plane home in the first
round.
Kraptakular

You're Lookin' Fine
I Need You
All Day and All of the Night
Victoria
Lola
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
Noise
Session Man
Around the Dial
A House in the Country
Sunny Afternoon
Funny Face
This team obviously opened up the big
Billboard book and took as many hits as he could get his
hands on. "Lola?" "All Day and All of the
Night?" "Sunny Afternoon?" "Dedicated
Follower of Fashion?" Was "Thriller" not
available? However, strong, lesser-known tunes such as
"Noise" and "Around the Dial" might
get this kraptakular disc into the later rounds.
Let the Brother Have Some

You Don't Know My Name
Mr. Reporter
Trust Your Heart
Come On Now
I'm A Lover Not A Fighter
Got My Feet on the Ground
Mindless Child of Motherhood
What's In Store For Me?
Wait Till the Summer Comes Along
Lincoln County
Brother
And the brother does have some, some
obscure tunes that is. I can't ever remember how some
of these songs go. It's like this guy just picked random
songs from a list so the bracket could be completed. Oh
Brother!

You Won't See Me
Nowhere Man
I'm Looking Through You
In My Life
Run For Your Life
Taxman
I'm Only Sleeping

She Said She Said
And Your Bird Can Sing
For No One
Doctor Robert
Ostracized for his radical theory of
the Beatles being better than the Kinks and still enraged
by Watershed's ranking of the
top ten Kinks and Beatles albums, these picks
won't get this nowhere man far in the tournament. Remember,
you can't spell Beatles without "beat". And
he will be in round one. Guaranteed.
People We Know (and Owe)

Preservation
Situation Vacant
Susannah's Still Alive
Monica
Beautiful Delilah
Mr. Shoemakers Daughter
Tim Soldier Man
The Moneygoround
Alcohol
Killer's Eyes
Johnny Thunder
Arthur
Will picking five songs with a persons
name in it get this team to the final four? Absolutely
not. A gimmicky title and drafting strategy may get this
entrant past the first round though. Gems like "Alcohol"
and "Killer's Eyes" will boost this team's back
court of "Monica" and "Beautiful Delilah."
But a weak front court of "Johnny Thunder "
and "Arthur" may not be enough to stave off
other teams.
Bruce Banner's Neurosis

Sitting in My Hotel
Underneath the Neon Sign
Permanent Waves
Oh Where Oh Where Is Love?
You Shouldn't Be Sad
I Never Met A Girl Like You Before
A Little Bit of Abuse
On the Outside
Hot Potatoes
Harry Rag
The Informer
This Time Tomorrow
If Bobby Fischer can play against a computer
then one can enter the Kinks tournament. I hate to say
it, but this machine has better picks than half of the
teams in the league. When a machine drafts "Sitting
in My Hotel" and "Permanent Waves" before
its human counterparts then Armageddon must be near. Welcome
to the machine.

Animal
Get Back In Line
For a not-so die-hard Kinks fan, this
team knows how to draft. With the 90's classic "Hatred
(A Duet)" at the one spot all the way down to "Get
Back In Line," this line-up is as solid as they come.
The only thing that may pose a problem for this team is
the manager's nickname of Poochie. It's just not as cool
sounding as A-Strike / Ostrich and sounds too much like
Biggie.

Unreal Reality
Plastic Man
Brainwashed
Nine To Five
When Work Is Over
Artificial Light
Last of the Steam-Powered Trains
A Gallon of Gas

The final team to enter the tournament
will most likely be the first to leave. With a mixture
of hits ("Daylight" "Plastic Man"),
rarities ("Artificial Light" "Scrapheap
City") and even the odd pick of Dolly Parton's "Nine
to Five," this collection is just to scattered to
get to the top of the pops.

Cinderella has shown up to the ball.
With controversy swirling from this teams surprise late
entrance into the tournament, concerns about Commissioner
Braithwaite abound. Controversy aside, this contestant
has come out swinging. "Definite Maybe," LEFT
HOOK. "Do It Again," RIGHT HOOK. This fair-weather
team has unleashed such a filler frenzy that the other
teams will need to stop their sobbing before this team
is through.

Another late entry into the tournament
puts commissioner Braithwaite under official investigation
for allowing this dandy of a team in. Again, great songs
like "Muswell Hillbilly," "Sweet Genevieve"
and "Scattered" slipped through the cracks to
make this rag tag team the Rudy of the tournament. But
as we all know, Rudy loses.
