POWER POP ALBUMS YOU SHOULD HAVE BUT DON'T
(joe)

Dillon Fence - Living Room Scene
Coolhand Band - Naive Charm
Cheap Trick - All Shook Up
Mother May I - Splitsville
Titanic Love Affair
Billy Squier - Tale Of The Tape
The Swingin' Neckbreakers - Live for Buzz

The Kinks are The Village Green Preservation Society

THE BEST KINKS ALBUMS
(rob)

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
The most solid Kinks album.

MUSWELL HILLBILLIES
Weight loss, paranoia, and cold, concrete cities encroaching upon the peaceful countryside. Good ol' Ray.

SOMETHING ELSE
Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa Fa Fa Fa. Don't worry. You'll get used to it.

SOAP OPERA
Sometimes going crazy helps an album (The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds) and sometimes it's just best to stay unproductive and lock yourself in your room for a few years (The Kinks' Preservation Acts I and II). Soap Opera is somewhere in between. Complete with spoken parts within a few of the songs, Soap Opera is not for Kinks beginners and even the Kinks veterans need to give it a few listens with an open mind and the understanding that Ray was still dealing with the fact that, thanks to a BBC programming snafu, Pete Townshend stole his thunder (and idea) by releasing Tommy before The Kinks could get Arthur out.

LOW BUDGET
Staying fit, economic stress, and making the best of it. Yep, good ol' Ray.

THE BEST COVER
(rob)
 n. (1)A song recorded by someone other that the original artist that kicks the shit out of the pioneering effort.  (2) A re-recording that is preferred over the original.   (3) A web-fingered marsupial indigenous the the Appalachian Mountain region.

THIS IS WHERE I BELONG by Frank Black
BEST COVER EVER PERIOD  An unbelievable improvement on the The Kink's original.

I FOUGHT THE LAW by The Clash
I think they mean it.

JUST LIKE HEAVEN by Dinosaur Jr.
I'd much rather listen to J. Mascis' crackley, whiny voice than Robert Smith's. Besides, Dinosaur Jr. rocks.  The Cure does not.

CROCODILE ROCK by Perfect
Because I never say, "I could really go for some Elton John or Pat Boone, right now".

THE GIRL YOU WANT by Soundgarden
For those times when you couldn't possibly listen to another electronic keyboard, bell or whistle.

THE BEST LINES (SONGS)
(rob)

"You say cliché, I say classic."
"Stuff 'N' Nonsense", Supersuckers

"On your knees, you pray to God.  I pray to anyone who'll listen."
"Seven Days A Week", Perfect

"There they go, fuckin' up the ratio."
"The Lowest Part Is Free", Archers of Loaf

"We come from flippin' burgers to just rock and rollin' for the Burger King."
"Rock & Roll Professionals", Local H

"Thought it was a twist off, I'm totally pissed off."
"Bang The Drum", Railroad Jerk

THE BEST SINGERS
(colin)

Robin Zander (Cheap Trick):
No surprise here. This guy put the Tricksters on his back from 1984 to 1997 until Rick and Tom finally stepped back up to his level again.  "If You Want My Love" and "Lookin' Out For #1" on the same album side?  Don't try that at home. (Or in your band)

Elvis
I guarantee that you stop and listen, if even for a moment, everytime you hear his voice.   Prove me wrong.

Little Richard
OWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Rockin for God...  Wait...  Or is it the devil...  Or is that Jerry Lee Lewis.   Richard knocks off "The Killer" with a halfcourt shot at the buzzer.

Lucinda Williams
From her heart, to her lips, to my ears.  Sigh.

Gene Simmons
Don't get soft on me people.  Gene is the voice of heavy metal. "RARRRRRR!!!" Is that James Hetfield?  Or Dennis DeYoung?  I can't tell the difference.  When the demon screams, "And I command you to kneel before the God Of Thunder" I actually look around out of the corner of my eye to make sure that all twenty thousand people in the arena haven't gotten on their knees except me.   This would make the Demon very angry.

THE BEST TV THEME
(rob)

THE FALL GUY
What?  Lee Majors sings it himself!

THE KIDS IN THE HALL
Hooks a plenty in this Surf/Rock-a-billy ditty.

THE ROCKFORD FILES
The original version is the best.  As the show got on in years, they began to tinker with perfection.  They ruined the bridge with a mess of noodly guitar and  made the keyboard a little less sweet.

SANFORD AND SON
A funky groove always makes the grind easier and never fails to make you look cool as you walk.

KING OF THE HILL
Pass me a beer.

THE BEST USE OF A SONG IN A MOVIE (rob)

"Where Is My Mind?" (Pixies) FIGHT CLUB
The only song in the movie comes in time for the closing credits.  It's one of those perfect fits that makes it seem the song was written for the movie.

"Still" (Geto Boys) OFFICE SPACE
The use of gangsta rap in a story of working in a cubicle is brilliant anyway, but using this song when they abduct a bothersome copier from the office to a remote location and "take care of it" is golden.

"Needle In The Hay" (Elliot Smith) THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
The song (beat in it's own right) takes the scene from sad to dire in no time.  It beat me down for days.

"Voodoo Child" (Jimi Hendrix) PAYBACK
If I'm ever rich enough, I'm going to hire someone to follow me around and play this song whenever I enter a room.

"Hey Man, Nice Shot" (Filter) THE CABLE GUY
Effective in the way "Still" is.  Not as sweet, but still hilarious.

THE BEST SLICE-OF-LIFE MOVIES
(rob)
SLICE-OF-LIFE MOVIE n.  (1) An often slowly paced, character-driven story that doesn't seem like anything of note is happening, but by the end, change is noticeable.  (2) When asked for the story's synopsis, a description is difficult to come by, and sounds very boring when it does, resulting in a "Just see it" response.

TREE'S LOUNGE
Just see it.

HEAVY
Just see it.

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME
Just see it.

BIG NIGHT
Just see it.

NOBODY'S FOOL
Just see it.

THE BEST LINE READINGS (Movies)
(rob)
They might not be the best lines in the movie, but the way they are said make them memorable.  I know this isn't going to transfer well to a text medium, but what are you going to do?  I know people.  If you see me and siphon enough whiskey down my throat, mayhap I'll give you a audio sampling.

"Don't anybody move!"
Darren McGavin (A CHRISTMAS STORY)

"Automobile?"
Gedde Watanabe, aka: Long Duk Dong  (SIXTEEN CANDLES)

"Jesus!"
Harrison Ford (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK))

"Ah, what the Christ."
William H. Macy (FARGO)

"I do not."
Brad Pitt (SEVEN)

THE BEST SOUNDTRACK-EXCLUSIVE SONGS
(rob)

"Tree's Lounge" - Hayden (TREE'S LOUNGE)
Perfectly captures the tone of the movie, even going as far as turning some of the dialogue into lyrics.

The opening credits theme to CHASHING AMY - David Pirner

"Make Me Sick" - Bash and Pop (CLERKS)

"Easy To Be Stupid" - Howlin' Maggie (BEAUTIFUL GIRLS)

"Pray For The Girls" - Frank Black (THE POWERPUFF GIRLS)

OFF THE TOP OF JOE'S HEAD
Since I have the attention span of a flea (and presumably most of you do too), it’s probably best if we only deal in factoid-length musings.

ONE: It’s much harder to hate a song when you don’t understand the lyrics. That’s the main reason I only listen to Brazilian music these days. I don’t know one word of Portuguese, and I don’t have a score to settle with anyone from Brazil (or the entire South American Continent for that matter. Does anyone have a copy of "Gigantes Del Pop – the 25 greatest Peruvian Hits"?)

TWO: Just when I thought Creed was the worst band of all time, along came Stained. Then came the new Creed album. I guess 15 million people can be wrong. That said, if Creed wants us to go on the road with them I'll tatoo the lyrick to [insert shitty Creed song here] on my ass.

THREE: The top five American bands working today (subject to change tomorrow):
  • Foo Fighters
  • Green Day
  • Rocket From The Crypt
  • Old 97’s
  • If Weezer and Fountains of Wayne joined forces

FOUR: Foo Fighters kick Nirvana’s ass

FIVE: The indefensible position: Listen. I LOVE THE CLASH. But if Rancid’s “And Out Come The Wolves” were a Clash album, it would be the Clash’s best album. You heard me.

SIX: Whatever happened to Chuck Cunningham?

SEVEN: The top five minor hits (1990-2002) that should have been major hits:

  • "Hum" by The Sheila Divine
  • "Who Sucked Out The Feeling" by Superdrag
  • "Love Lovely Love" by Jonny Polonsky
  • "The Lady In The Front Row" by Redd Kross
  • "All The Kids Are Right" by Local H

EIGHT: It’s not easy being a Milwaukee Brewers fan. Only the pitchers and catchers have reported and I’m already thinking, "Wait 'till next year."

NINE: There is something to be said for knowing when to hang ‘em up (see: Jim Brown, Sandy Koufax, The Replacements), rather than sticking around long enough for people to start to feel sorry for you (see: Willie Mays, Johnny Unitas, Elvis). But, damn, there’s something romantic about hanging on well past the point of pathetic (see: Cool Hand Luke, Elvis). And there’s really something to be said for having one night of success and eating yourself into a diabetic coma (see: Buster Douglas, Elvis).

TEN: Can we place a moratorium on the word "hero" for a month or so?
