'member that thing I said
I wasn't going to do? Well, I did it. I saw Kill Bill. I
held out for six weeks. For someone who possesses very little
will power, that's pretty good. To be fair, I didn't actually
go to see Kill Bill. It was more like shown to me.
There's a local movie house called Studio 35. It's single
screen theater where you can order food and drink beer while
you watch a double feature. Occasionally, there will be
a triple feature.
The evening started with a pizza pie, a couple beers, and
Intolerable Cruelty. I was joined by a few friends for School
of Rock and a couple more beers. By the time Kill Bill came
on, there was nothing I could do. ...nothing, I said.
OK. Semantics aside. I saw it, and it was great. I saw
it a second time just to be sure it wasn't the alcohol.
It wasn't the booze.
Now, if only it was an entire movie. Each time I saw Kill
Bill, I felt unfulfilled. I could have sat for the second
half.
There was a little fatty in the patty, which makes me wonder
the true reason for splitting a three, three and a half
hour movie in two. Greedy studio wanting more screenings
per day? Not unheard of. The ego of a big-time director?
More than likely.
I think Tarantino is great, but for the sake of telling
a good story you have to sometimes trim or cut your favorite
part for the sake of the pace of the story. (director commentaries
of deleted scenes tell me this all the time.) I can see
making the case for breaking up The Lord Of The Rings, but
that's an epic story that can't be told in a traditional
movie length. Kill Bill is a revenge, kung-fu picture. It
doesn't need to spend that much time telling the story.
It could have been trimmed down without effecting the story
or style.
I'll see the second part when is comes out in February.
But, I will always wonder what could have been if a little
self-restraint was used.
...oh, yeah, Intolerable Cruelty sucks, and School of Rock
is funny. |
